Van Insulation and Sound Deadening: Sizes, Coverage and Planning
Choosing van insulation starts with a measured layout and a clear specification for each part of the conversion. Atlas supplies Dacron polyester insulation, self-adhesive foil-faced foam and sound deadening sheets. They come in different formats and thicknesses, so compare the material you need before comparing pack prices.
This guide sets out the current Atlas sizes and explains how to estimate material quantities. For installation details and performance specifications, check the instructions for the selected product and the requirements of your conversion.
Compare the materials and pack sizes
| Material | Roll or pack size | Thickness | Area supplied |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dacron polyester, narrow roll | 39 cm × 15 m | 50 mm | 5.85 m² |
| Dacron polyester, wide roll | 69 cm × 15 m | 50 mm | 10.35 m² |
| Self-adhesive foil-faced foam | 1 m × 10 m | 5, 7, 10 or 20 mm | 10 m² |
| Sound deadening sheets | 10 sheets, each 250 mm × 380 mm | 1.8 mm | 0.95 m² per pack |
Area describes the amount of material supplied. It does not measure insulation performance, noise reduction or the number of vehicles a pack will treat. Confirm the required product specifications separately.
Choose a format that suits the space
Dacron polyester: compare the 39 cm and 69 cm roll widths against your measured spaces and cutting plan. Both options are 50 mm thick. A sample option is available if you want to examine the material before ordering rolls.
Foil-faced foam: every listed thickness comes in a 1 m × 10 m roll. Check the space available behind the final lining before choosing 5, 7, 10 or 20 mm. Its self-adhesive backing still requires a suitable surface and the correct preparation.
Sound deadening sheets: the smaller sheet format lets you plan individual pieces for vehicle panel treatment. Follow the selected product's application guidance when deciding which areas to treat; pack area is not a recommendation to cover every surface.
How to calculate material coverage
- Measure each area you plan to treat and note its shape, access and available depth.
- Convert all measurements to metres. Multiply width by length to estimate the area of a rectangular piece.
- Sketch the cuts within the roll width or sheet dimensions. Allow for trimming, joins and unusable offcuts.
- Add the quantities for each material separately, then round up to the whole rolls or packs you intend to order.
For example, one 250 mm × 380 mm sheet contains 0.25 × 0.38 = 0.095 m². Ten sheets contain 0.95 m² before waste. If your fitting plan calls for 2 m² of this material, two packs provide only 1.9 m²; three provide 2.85 m². Check that your cutting layout and waste allowance also fit within that quantity.
A vehicle model or wheelbase alone does not establish the order quantity. Windows, roof layout, existing trim and the areas you choose to treat all affect your measurements.
Checks before ordering
- Confirm the material and thickness specified for each area.
- Check surface preparation, compatibility and fitting instructions.
- Plan insulation alongside ventilation, moisture management, wiring and access for maintenance.
- Confirm quantities, delivery postcode and the date materials are needed.
If you need a performance figure or suitability statement for a particular project, ask for the relevant product information before buying. Do not infer thermal or acoustic performance from thickness alone.
